Apple has started developing a Face ID-enabled smart doorbell
Apple has begun developing a smart doorbell that will automatically open the door by recognizing the owner's face. The innovative, Face ID-enabled system can be integrated with Apple's HomeKit platform to control smart devices in the home.
Apple currently offers third-party HomeKit-enabled locks on its website, but the new Face ID-enabled smart doorbell will open up a whole new area of use for facial recognition technology. According to 9to5Mac, the device will integrate with existing smart locks, and it's also possible that Apple will partner with independent lock makers to create an all-in-one solution.
As Bloomberg's Mark Gurman noted, Apple has traditionally entered established markets with innovative products with unique features. Face ID Ring will be no exception and could seriously compete with solutions from Amazon Ring and Google Nest due to its high level of security and convenience. However, Gurman clarifies that the device is in an early stage of development and its release is not expected before the end of next year.
Still, experts warn of potential risks. There is a chance - albeit small - that the facial recognition system could make a mistake and let strangers in. In addition, if attackers are able to use third-party locks, this could lead to user dissatisfaction, even if the lock was made by another company.
If Apple decides not to develop its own device, as Gurman reports, the company could sell its technology to other brands, such as Logitech or Belkin, with whom it already has business relationships. In any case, Apple plans to aggressively expand and strengthen its presence in the smart home device market.
